Who and What is Buddha and Why

Siddhartha Guatama, known as the Buddha (often mis-spelled as Buddah) was born in modern Nepal; between 560-566 B. C. His father Suddhodana was ruler of the sakya people. His mother queen Maya died one week after his birth. Prince Siddhartha lived in luxury at the palace.
One day prince Siddhartha ventured out into the world and was confronted with the reality of life. He saw an old person, a sick person, a corpse being carried to a funeral and a begging monk in a yellow robe.
The next day at the age of twenty nine, he left his kingdom to lead an ascetic life
and find a way to relieve universal suffering. For six years he studied and followed different methods of meditation with various teachers.
He was never fully satisfied untill he realised the path to liberation was one of balance rather than extremism, he called this the middle way. People were unsure of what he was and some asked if he was a god , a devil, an angel or a person,to which Siddhartha replied "I am awake'' thus he became known as BUDDHA which means awakened or ENLIGHTENED ONE.
